Industry Specific ComplianceThe Government of Karnataka on August 19, 2026, issued the Karnataka Municipalities (Amendment) Bill, 2026, further to amend the Karnataka Municipalities Act, 1964.

The following has been stated: -

•Section 177 of the Karnataka Municipalities Act, 1964 is proposed to be substituted to empower Commissioners/Chief Officers to declare poorly maintained private streets posing public safety or health risks as public streets, after issuing notices and considering objections.

•Such streets must have connectivity to a public road/street, with provisions for streets falling within more than one Municipality.

•An erstwhile landowner whose road is declared public after benefiting from the sale/transfer of adjoining sites will not be entitled to compensation or Development Rights Certificate.

•The substituted section also defines “erstwhile land owner” and “public street”, including roads, footways and attached drains.
